As for bugs, you probably didn't hang out so close to horses all the time. I have a clear memory of the mosquitoes in Maine in the evenings. We used to plaster ourselves with Off, never worrying about possible toxic side effects. Nowadays I just go indoors if the bugs are bad. Yesterday was so bad I could have wrung my clothes out they were so soaked with sweat. This seems more like the weather we used to get in August than June.
